How it’s calculated
- 01His pay is in USD. Converted at 1.40 and treated as gross annual income.
- 02Stress-tested at 6.34%: the contract rate (4.34%) plus 2%, or 5.25%, whichever is higher.
- 0325-year amortization, compounded semi-annually like every Canadian fixed mortgage.
- 04Housing costs (payment, property tax at 1% of price, $100/month heat) capped at 39% of income. No other debts, so 44% TDS never binds.
- 05Minimum down: 5% on the first $500K, 10% up to $1,500,000, 20% above it.

Larkin suspension: the facts
Why Dylan Larkin was suspended, and what it’s costing him.
Last updated . Sources: TSN, ESPN, AP, CapWages.
Why was Dylan Larkin suspended?
The Detroit Red Wings suspended Dylan Larkin without pay on October 29, 2026, after his agent, Pat Brisson, told the team Larkin would no longer play for Detroit. Larkin asked for a trade over the summer, first naming three teams and later expanding the list to 10. Interim GM Shawn Horcoff said the team will keep exploring trades.
How long is Dylan Larkin suspended?
No end date has been announced. Larkin’s agent told the Red Wings he would no longer play for Detroit, the team says it is still exploring trades, and reports say he will stay out until the situation is resolved. Each day it lasts costs him another day of salary.
Did the NHL suspend Dylan Larkin?
No. This is a team suspension: the Detroit Red Wings suspended him without pay, not the league, and it isn’t discipline for an on-ice incident. (The NHL did suspend Larkin once before, for one game in 2021, for punching Tampa Bay’s Mathieu Joseph.)
Is Dylan Larkin suspended with or without pay?
Without pay. Each day of the suspension he forfeits one day of his 2026-27 salary: $8,000,000 spread over 194 days, or $41,237.11 a day.
How much money is Larkin losing?
$41,237.11 a day, $1,718.21 an hour and $28.64 a minute, in US dollars. A week of the suspension costs him about $288,660. If it lasted to the end of the regular season, it would cost him roughly $7,050,000.
What is Dylan Larkin’s contract?
An eight-year, $69.6 million extension signed with Detroit on March 1, 2023, running through the 2030-31 season. The cap hit is $8.7 million a year, while his actual salary is $8 million in 2026-27. It carries a full no-trade clause through 2027-28 and a modified no-trade clause (a 10-team list) for the final three seasons.
Can the Red Wings trade Larkin while he’s suspended?
Detroit says it is still exploring trades. Because his contract carries a full no-trade clause this season, any trade needs Larkin’s approval.
Is Dylan Larkin still the Red Wings captain?
No. Detroit stripped Larkin of the captaincy on September 11, 2026, after his offseason trade request, and started the 2026-27 season without a captain. He had worn the C since January 2021.
What house could Larkin’s lost pay buy?
Treated as one year of gross income and run through a standard Canadian insured-mortgage qualification (39% GDS, 44% TDS, stress-tested at 6.34%), one day of his lost pay qualifies for about a $241,000 home. One week qualifies for about $2,130,000.
How do lenders decide how much house I can afford in Canada?
Two ratios. Gross debt service (GDS): your mortgage payment, property tax, heat and half of any condo fees can’t exceed 39% of your gross income. Total debt service (TDS): those costs plus every other debt payment can’t exceed 44%. Payments are tested at the stress-test rate, which is the greater of your contract rate plus 2% or 5.25%.
